Day 28: Nantahala Outdoor Center to Sassafras Gap Shelter

Everyone,  I hate to be brief, but I’m tired. Today kicked my tail! 3000 foot climb. The biggest yet. Started at 1230pm, finished about 730pm. Total distance of 7 miles. Passed a great view of the Nantahala River Gorge. Some of this was seriously steep stuff. May be my hardest day yet.

But I’m still in good spirits. It’s windy out and there’s thunderstorms in the forecast.

I will try to write a better Day 28 post tomorrow.

Good night!

Wandering on…

  1. The BEST post is any post…………brief or not. They are ALL welcome views into this epic journey you’ve taken on. I’m so glad your spirits are still high even after this climb. Hope the storm passed over quickly and this morning is a sunny day with cool breezes! I know you will but………be safe. Love you.

    • Thanks mom! The night held off the rain but now in the morning it’s raining! It will be a wet camp take down today.

  2. I remember that climb out of the NOC. One word! BRUTAL !!! I was reading your post and read where you stayed in Bryson City. I stayed in a bunk with 3 others at the NOC 2013. Trust me when I say, when you leave the trail, you will long for the time you spent trudging through all that mud and climbing mountain elevations only meant for the young at heart. You will have determined it was not your body hindering you but rather your thoughts. Remember mud, rocks, roots and rain are much better than trudging through 2 feet of snow and miles of iced over trails. Although, I prefer hiking/tenting in snow and ice. LOL
