I am now back in Asheville, NC where I will be picked up in the morning. During my drive here I called Bluff Mountain Outfitters in Hot Springs, the same place I’ve twice used for transport the last two weeks. The shuttle driver will be the same guy as the other two times. I plan to tell him, “it’s nothing personal, but I truly hope this is the last time I have to call you!”
Getting here to Asheville was fun, depending on one’s definition of fun. I didn’t leave home until 11 30am for the 6 hour drive that lay ahead. I was racing the clock, as I had to return the car by 6pm when Hertz closes. With only two stops totalling about 30 minutes, I arrived at 5:52pm – just in the knick of time. I’m sure glad the speed traps were placed in my favor. Hahaha!
The drive itself was great. Traffic was light most if the way, and there was only one accident along the nearly 400 mile drive. The scenery was beautiful and when I finally caught sight of the mountains, I felt I was returning to where I was supposed to be.
While home, I made a few gear adjustments. I’ve changed out my winter sleeping bag for the lighter summer bag. I have ditched my microfleece insulation layer, but retained my down jacket. I ditched my gloves which have only been used twice the whole trip. Finally, I ditched my rain pants. All said, I ditched about 3 pounds of weight. Yay!
I’m genuinely excited to start hiking tomorrow. I’ve checked my guide book and have a rough itinerary outline extending to the end of May. I’ll cover from Tanyard Gap to Erwin in 5 days. After that, 4 to 5 days to Elk Park. Finally, about 3 to 4 days further to Hampton, TN. That will take me through May 28th when I leave the trail for the planned excursion to Northern Virginia for a Rush concert.
Being at Hampton will leave me about 40 miles shy of Damascus, VA which is the first town in my home state. I so which that I could make it all the way to Damascus before the show, but I just don’t see it happening. No matter, though, as I’ll cover those 40 miles when I return.
It’s now the next morning and I anxiously await for my ride back to Tanyard Gap…
Wandering on! 🙂

Kelly, glad you are back on the trail! I’ve been thinking about you so much! You are on so much more than a trail…you are on a personal journey that few ever have the chance to take. Anyway, I will be able to see you when you are in VA…near the parkway and near Roanoke so we can have some fun and get to hang out. I know I’m not the proper motivation to get to VA, but maybe it would be good for both of us. Love you and hugs!!! heather
