Day 2: Hawk Mountain Shelter to Sassafras Mountain

I am in my tent, camped beside the A.T. on top of a mountain! I only hiked about 3.5 miles today at a very slow going pace. So you could say that “next shelter” thing didn’t happen.

After literally passing out last night from a 9.1 mile day, I slept a lengthy and comfortable 13 hours. I didn’t even wake until 930 am and didn’t start packing until 10am.

With most everything put away, I had to get some food. I headed over to the shelter where I cooked last night’s dinner. After that, I ate this morning’s breakfast. I also are some of yesterday’s uneaten lunch stuff. So I was a full, sore, tired lethargic mess!

It wasn’t until 130pm that I started hiking – in the rain again. It’s been raining today but not nearly as hard as yesterday. From my tent right now, there’s the pitter patter of a light rain hitting the forest floor. Also, the occasional strong breeze blows water drops off the trees.

Leaving so late, there was no way I would make the next shelter. The plan became to hike until near dark and find a campsite with enough time to set up in daylight. I found this place at the top of the mountain at 630pm and promptly set up.

There were a few scenic overlooks today, but sadly no views due to clouds and fog. Wow, I can really feel the cold setting in. I think it’s time to get in the sack!!!

Wandering on…
