I have obtained a SPOT Gen 3 GPS Tracker. There are two places where you can track me.
The first is through a site called TrackLeaders. This site stores all of my GPS tracking points and are displayed on a map which also shows the Appalachian Trail. Here is a link directly to my tracking page on TrackLeaders. It cannot be embedded here, you have to click the link which will open a new window.

Here is an embedded map from TrackLeaders that shows all other hikers that are using this service. On this map, I am called “YesRushGen.” Most hikers would use their trail name, but I don’t have one yet. So I’ve used my online handle for now. If you click the link for “YesRushGen” on this map, a new window will open to the same link given above.
If either of those are not working for some reason, here is a method of last resort. Click the link below for my SPOT shared page.

Using that link, you will still be able to track me – but it is limited to the previous 50 tracking points only. I have my tracker set to update every 2.5 minutes.
The rest of this page is old placeholder crap. I’m just leaving here for historical purposes. Plus, I kind of like the map.
This is kind of a placeholder page right now.
My intention is to obtain a GPS tracking/locator device of some kind and have that interface with a map so my present position can be shown.
In the interim, a simple static map of the trail is shown here.
I am checking out possible GPS choices as I’m looking at this map since I’m assuming there isn’t a giant, red path painted of the floor of the forests and mountains you’re going to be hiking over to keep you on course?!
There is no giant paved red path, however, the trail is “painted” with white blazes on trees and rocks. I will just follow the white blazes.
Hey Kelly I had no idea that you were into the woods thing. What a great thing to do! Much luck and please stay alert and safe! I am also glad to hear from you. Valarie Evans
Thanks Valarie – it is nice to hear from you as well! It’s been quite a while. I hope all is going well, and we do miss you at TCC!
Kelly – I am excited for you. I know you will have a great time. My son hiked 62 miles of the AT back when he was 17. He did it the first week of July with the Boy Scouts. How are we going to get along at TCC without for 5 – 7 months??????
Thanks Linda. TCC will survive – I am documenting job duties so that others can perform them. The more important question is – Will I survive the AT??? 🙂
Wow, you go Kelly! This sounds like a wonderful adventure. I look forward to following your journey. TCC won’t be the only ones in the VCCS missing you. Enjoy!
http://trackleaders.com -this might be a good solution for this. Looks just like what you were wanting.
Thanks Dan, I will definitely check this out.
Yeah – that is exactly the sort of thing I’m looking for. The live tracking map can even be embedded directly here on the “Find Me” page! Thanks for the tip Danno!
Kelly,
I admire your courage, your sense of adventure, and dedication in attempting this. I will gladly follow you and wish you a safe and wonderful journey.
Thanks for the well wishes Mario! Exciting times are ahead…
Hi Kelly … this is Dave. Took time away from things to catch your blog . First of all, hope you’re doing well. Secondly, was hoping to see you at the Farm before you left for the AT run…or walk,…whichever you prefer. Now that you’re out there, can’t wait til we can find you on the map.Be checking you out from time to time throughout your journey. Keep your head up and be safe. Catch you later.
Hey Dave! First, thanks for checking out the blog. Second, I haven’t left for the A.T. yet! I don’t leave until next year on March 12th.
Kelly,
Have you entered any of the 5K or 8K runs in the area to get prepared for the hiking you are going to do?
Hey Linda – no I don’t plan on doing any runs. Most of my physical prep will take the form of 10 to 15 mile day hikes in various locations. I have also considered joining a gym – but no firm decision yet. Although thru-hiking the A.T. is physically demanding, the mental demands are far greater. Of the 2000 – 3000 folks who set out each year – only about 600 finish. Very few quit because of physical issues. Finishing is mostly a mental game.
The best news out of this was the Kelly obtained a “smart” phone!
Kelly, You are doing great!!! Remember…”It’s not the destination….it’s the journey” so give yourself those much needed breaks both physically and mentally to rejuvenate your spirit!!! That’s the true meaning of this endeavor. You will succeed!!! Sylvia
Thanks for the words of wisdom! 🙂
wow, what an adventure so far!!! I admire you for realizing that to continue hiking wasn’t a good idea. Instead, you took a “break” and went home to rejuvenate yourself. Hang in there and ‘keep on-keeping on’. You will succeed!!!
Sylvia
